 1.Simple sentence (সরল বাক্য

 2.Compound sentence (যৌগিক বাক্য)

3.Complex sentence (জটিল বাক্য)

Simple sentence: যে Sentence এ একটি মাত্র Subject এবং একটি মাত্র finite verb (সমাপিকা ক্রিয়া ) থাকে, তাকে Simple sentence বলে। এ ছাড়া Simple sentence, Inspite of, Because of, Being ইত্যাদির সাহায্যে গঠিত হয়।

Compound sentence: যে sentence এ দুই বা ততোধিক Principal clause থাকে এবং clause গুলো coordinating conjunctions (For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So) দ্বারা যুক্ত থাকে, তাকে Compound sentence বলে। coordinating conjunctions গুলো ‘fanboys’ শব্দ দ্বারা মনে রাখা সহজ।

যেমন: He is poor but he is honest.

জেনে রাখা ভাল:

Clause: Clause হলো বাক্যের একটি অংশ যার একটি Subject ও একটি verb থাকে। Clause প্রধানত তিন প্রকার-

1.Principal clause

2.Subordinate clause

3.Co-ordinate clause

Principal clause: Principal clause এর অর্থ প্রকাশ করার জন্য অন্য কোন clause এর উপর নির্ভরশীল থাকে না। অর্থাৎ মূল Sentence টি থেকে আলাদা করে লিখলেও এটি স্বাধীন বাক্য হিসেবে অর্থ প্রকাশ করতে পারে। যেমন: I saw a man who was wise

Subordinate clause: যে clause, principal clause এর সাহায্য ছাড়া একাকী অর্থ করতে পারে না, তাকে Subordinate clause বলে। Subordinate মানে  “অধীন” । যেমন: I saw a man who was wise

Co-ordinate clause: যখন দুই বা ততোধিক সমশ্রেনীর clause কোন Coordinating conjunction দ্বারা যুক্ত হয়, তখন  তাদেরকে Co-ordinate clause বলে। এক্ষেত্রে clause দুটি স্বাধীন থাকে। যেমন: He is poor but he is honest.

Complex sentence: যে Sentence এ একটি মাত্র principal clause এবং এক বা একাধিক  subordinate clause থাকে, তাকে Complex sentence বলে।  Complex sentence এ Subordinate clause টি সাধারণত subordinating conjunctions ( though, although, till, until, before, which, what, when, who, whom, after, unless, since, if, as, because, that) ইত্যাদি দ্বারা শুরু হয়।

N:B: Clause এবং phrase এর মধ্যে প্রধান পার্থক্য হচ্ছে – একটি clause এ একটি verb থাকে আর একটি phrase এ কোন verb থাকে না. phrase এ participle, gerund, infinitive, ইত্যাদি থাকলেও কোন verb থাকে না. simple sentence এ সাধারণত একটি clause এবং একটি phrase থাকে।
